How I Treated Cough and Cold in My Baby Naturally And So Can You

How I treated cough and cold naturally in my babyTreating cough and cold in babies naturally is certainly essential.

In fact, every Mom must know about it.

However, I never knew cough in infants could be so troublesome until my little one fell ill.

His chest was heavy and he could hardly breathe from his nose. It was such a hard time for us at home.

But, one thing was sure and I was determined that I am not going to take my baby to the doctor and get those high dose medicines.

I have always been of a firm belief that natural remedies too can work wonders and hence was determined to treat his runny nose and cold at home.

It wasn’t easy though because natural remedies always take time- they work but in a slow manner.

What Did I Personally Do to Treat Cough and Cold in My Baby

The winter had just set in our country and we were taking special care and attention of our little one. He was covered from head to toe but still one night I saw him having difficulty in breathing and his chest was also congested.

Apply Lukewarm Garlic Oil

The first thing I did was to apply lukewarm garlic oil on his chest, neck and feet.

I applied a little bit on his nose as well. This I created at home only. I just took a pan added some 10 garlic pieces in mustard oil and placed it on gas.

Then till the time garlic was completely burnt and the oil remained just half, I closed the gas and put this oil in a jar along with the garlic pieces. In fact, in my country India this is one of the most common cold remedies.

And there are a lot of households which use garlic oil even for treating backpain too. If you have any kind of backpain or neck pain, knee pain you can apply lukewarm garlic oil on it. Garlic Oil is one of the best.

It is known to provide great relief. I have tried it on myself as well when once my neck was paining too much. I just applied and after around half an hour, it was much better.

Providing Steam to Baby

The next important step which I took was to provide STEAM to my baby.

Yes if your baby suffers from runny nose- steam is the most important thing to take. However always take precaution when doing so. Make sure not to overdo the same.

Also you need to have a good steam inhaler for kids which is of really good quality.

Heat With Warm Cloth (with care)

Another natural remedy which I opted was to heat the chest and neck with a warm cloth. This too is said to relieve the congestion of the chest and provide relief to the baby.

These were little yet effective steps which I took and thankfully I could see that my baby was feeling much better.

I did all these things for the next few days too and thankfully he became fine by the Grace of God.

Just to add: I also gave him honey and added a pinch of ginger juice to it.

This is said to provide heat to the baby and treat any kind of nasal congestion too. In fact it is said to be a must to be given to the little one in winter months.

Prefer to give your baby lukewarm water and milk instead of cold one since cold milk or water tends to aggravate the situation.

I also add camphor in the coconut oil and keep it tight in a close jar. Every night I just heat it a bit and then rub his chest with it.

Camphor too is known to have lots of medicinal properties and is known to be quite effective in treating congestion.

Some Effective Remedies for Treating Cough and Cold in Infants

Treating cough and cold in babiesAs you might be aware that FDA has warned against using OTC cough medications in children below the age of four years.

In fact American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend the use of any cough medicine at all under children less than 6 years of age.

This is so as they contain dextromethorphan (DXM) which is considered harmful and in extreme cases fatal too in 5% of the infants.

So, as a natural, holistic mother here is what you can do:

  • Make sure your baby is drinking lots of fluids, this is to ensure that he remains hydrated.
  • Take 4 tbsp of Olive oil and add to it 8-10 drops of any of the essential oils (esp. Rosemary Oil). Rub the child’s chest, back and neck and then cover him up.
  • Just make him drink a couple of drops of lemon juice and maple syrup. Put it in his feeding bottle and let him drink.
  • If it is possible, you can even create a tea for the infant-using a mixture of sage and thyme. These herbs are known to have soothing effect on the mind and body.
  • Just take a pinch of each of these herbs in a glass and cover with warm water. Let it remain for a few minutes and then strain. Now put this tea into his bottle and let him drink.
  • You also need to use a cool mist humidifier in the room where the baby sleeps. This is also known to ease the cough. If you add a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the humidifier it is known to create a calming effect.

Useful Ayurvedic Remedies for Cough in Babies

As you know I belong to the land of Ayurveda (i.e India) it is but natural for me to pick these easy to follow ayurvedic remedies for my baby.

If the baby suffers from dry cough then boil ½ tbsp of licorice powder in a cup of water for a few minutes.

When it is lukewarm, let the baby sip one teaspoon of it after every few hours. Licorice is known to contain antibacterial properties that help to fight the bacteria causing cough.

If the baby suffers from dry and wet cough both then in a cup of milk, boil ½ tbsp of turmeric for 3 minutes. Also add ½ tbsp of sugar to it. Feed this to baby after every few hours.

For wet cough in infants, in a glass of water add a small stick of cinnamon, 2 cloves, just a little bit of ginger powder, 1 tbsp of sugar. Now boil this water and let the baby sip it off and on.

If the baby has cough with phlegm then in 1 cup of hot water add a pinch of dry ginger powder and 1 tbsp of honey. Mix it well and when it is lukewarm give it to the baby.

These are some of the easy and effective natural remedies for treating cough and cold in babies.
